This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. My sincerest sympathy to the wife and family.

I went to Guatemala last October and was walking in broad daylight in touristy town Antigua when I got thrown to the ground and had a knife pulled at my throat. I started screaming and yelling (no one was around) but for some reason, they got back into their car and drove off. I was extremely lucky.

I was going to return this year to finish my Central America trip but now I don't know if I feel confident enough.

And yes, there is no reason whatsoever to bring in Obama?!?!

Yup. I said this in a thread just yesterday. I have dubbed Guatamala "Scariest Place on Earth" for a good, good reason.

What a horrible outcome to what should have been an enjoyable family vacation...

so sad, there is no way this man could have protected himself & his wife. No wait one minute, Sam Colt did not create man but he did make them equal. If this man would have protected himself and his wife with a shot gun, or a hand gun we would not here of the story, the liberal media would not run it. I really feel sorry for this family.

Definitely a sad ending for what seemed to be a new great adventure for the couple. I'm not sure what the gun control laws are exactly but I know they're very strict in mexico and in central american countries. If you (joe schmoe citizen or tourist) are caught with a gun, you're in deep dook, as in jail time. Generally, only police and rebels are armed. If I was traveling in one of those countries for any length of time, I wouldn't carry a gun. A switchblade maybe, but not a gun. Or maybe hire a bodyguard.

Yet another reason to deport as many illegal Guatemalans out of the USA. If they will do that in their own country, you know they will do it here.

OF course no one from the good old USA has ever killed anyone! That must not be why we have the highest percentage of our population compared to almost any other country locked up in prison. Couldnt be from all the crime thats commited here is it??Naaaw.

Excuse me? Guatemalans ought to be deported solely because a few Guatemalans murdered an American man and injured his wife in Guatemala? I'm a Guatemalan living in America and I would never dream of murdering anyone. It saddens me that this occurred to these people. I'm also sorry to hear that there are people in this world like you who believe that individuals belonging to a specific country or ethnicity behave, think, and act all alike. I suspect the corruption that has enveloped within certain Guatemalan citizens who make the choice of becoming criminals arises due to the socioeconomic discrepancies within the country and the individual's will to survive even if their actions are malicious. The only reason violence is more rampant in Guatemala versus the United States can be attributed to Guatemala's higher poverty rate.

are so arrogant to think that every citizen from Guatemala is to be held accountable and judge for the acts made by other Guatemala's in Guatemala. You are probably not the only racist and uneducated soul out there unfortunately for the rest of us, that thinks this way, but just to educate you, a bit... They're not here to murder you. They are here to support they're families. An average work week in Guatemala is 44hrs. at 169.40 U.S. dollars per week out of a population of 12,728,111 only 3.958 million of the country's population is PROVIDED employment (that's 31%) So if you aren't able to the math that means....by working in the us they, at minimum wadge, are able to earn 6.50-6.55an hr (47.96 an hr.) in Guatemala. witch intern means a better life for there families.

P.S. 56% of the population lives below the poverty line.

Now can we get to the crux of the matter, how, what, and why? Does Mexico really shoot these people? I had a friend once who was from Guatemala and she wasn't crazy. What is going on?

Guatemala is a very poor country. Pirating is well known to happen down in that region, not just Guatemala. That's why tourists are urged to use caution down there.

My heartfelt sympathy to the family.

Our Boat was boarded off the town of El Estor in Lake Izabal in April by four men armed with a pistol and machetes. I struggled with the gunman luckily disarming him but was badly beaten by another man with a wooden baton. They stole our outboard engine and left. We radioed for assistance but none came out although we were anchored just off a navy post. Their outboards were not functioning. The police informed us that there was little they could do. The situation there is extremely dangerous as this murder highlights.

Our incident was placed on a www notice board for yachtsman and was well circulated in the Guatemalan waters.

As for Richard's comment, foreign yachts are not permitted to carry firearms in Guatemalan waters.

BGG: how fortunate that you came through that experience in tact! You didn't say when it happened ... recently, 10. 15 years ago? Doesn't sound like the police are doing much to protect the boaters. I would be tempted to write a letter to the government (or whomever would be appropriate) and complain about the lack of protection from local authorities. Word get out among boating tourists and unless the government enforces protection for tourist in that area, they will eventually quit coming. That's fine by me if the government won't be proactive in this issue.

Again, I'm glad you're here to tell us this story.

This area of Guatemala is becoming more dangerous. There is an increase of robbery and violent crime. In document cases the local police are protecting the criminals and gangs. The local police have been able to keep the military from pursuing the criminals.

If you are boating in the area dock at at marina with security. Never leave your boat on the "hook".

More and more reason to stay in the US for trips and vacations..keep the US going by spending money here instead of out of country..My sympathy to the family.

or at least visit countries that aren't flagged as being so dangerous. There are lots of other nations where this kind of thing isn't commonplace. Tourists really need to know everything about their destination.

Just another attack on an America abroad. These people are terrorist and sneaking in to America at the tune of 10000+ per day. Wait till the muslims get they're way. Lock and load is all I can say. Fire the government of all nations and vote in new with non-corrupt people. Sad but true. We are running out of time...Have a better tommorow

I've been to Mexico and the carribean several times and it is one of those things where you have to use your head. You really can't wander and explore the country. You have to stay in the recommended areas. Also, not everyone is bad down there. I've met some pretty nice people.

We live easy lives that we don't wake up afraid of losing every morning. We have a good quality of life which promotes contentment, which in turn, makes it easier to live a law abiding life. Our laws are fair to us and we are protected by them in ways lots of people in the world aren't.

That's a given anywhere but from our point of view, some of the things that happen in some of these nations, that may seem par for the course for someone who's used to them, seem horrendous to us because we get off a lot easier.

President Bush is currently in office. This happened under his watch. Are you saying that the current President should respond every time a tourist ventures into dangerous waters, or countries.

Consider this: most of the rest of the world does not like the US--especially after this administration's self-centered, arrogant, uneducated "international policies". Like it or not, the rest of the world is a connected place in business, religion, politics, etc. Bush has done a fantastic job at alienating the rest of the world. They just break in and ask for money then shoot you. Happens way to offer around there. I want your money, you have to much, you don't deserve it. There's so much to see and do in this country, why go anywhere else? Yes, I know you can get robbed and/or killed here, but at least you won't get targeted simply because you're American. Plus, in many parts of the US, you are at least allowed the means to defend yourself. And like a previous poster said, let's keep the money in this country.

I feel safer already. The sad fact is that in a city like Los Angeles, NY etc you are more likely to be a victim of a crime then almost anywhere else in this world, except of course Iraq or any other country in the middle of a war zone ,now that's not Bashing America 'Amber" you Republican brainwashed amitron, thats just the facts. Until we as a Nation admit that then nothing will ever get done about it. You can stick your head in the sand all you want and shout "america is number 1 ,love it or leave it" as loud as you want but it still wont change that simple fact. If you dont believe me google Crime Rates for different countries and compare yourself. By the way the US media is biased towards the conservative slant. You can find books articles on that as well. one is not allowed to post links here.
