This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Why do the stupid buttholes that run the ferry line put the boat out to sea despite a terrible storm? The owners of the boat and the company should be given the death penalty for mass murder!

I agree these 3rd world countries never learn. Ferry folks just thought of bottom line$$$. We need to worry about our floods here in USA. We need to start helping our OWN people. We give away to much help to these other countries and they spit on us all the time.

      Major frank,

You only wrote two and a half lines, and most of it is just wrong. Making a statement that 3rd world countries never learn is just nonsense. These are human beings, making human decisions, and that causes an occasional bad decision. You say the owners were thinking only of the bottom line...hmmmmm...I'm pretty sure that the cost of the boat sinking, the loss of income for many months due to the ferry being sunk, the lawsuits that will be generated by this.... I think the ferry company would not want to put it's ship, it's crew, and it's passengers at risk.

We don't know what the sea state was like when they departed. We don't know what reports the Coast Guard and the Ferry had about projected wave height was. There is a lot that we don't know about this case. It's simply too early to judge what decisions were made and who is actually at fault. People are too quick to condemn. Let's just wait and see what the facts are, and then you can point the finger all you want.

You also know very little about the outstanding relationship that our nation has had in the past, and continues to have, with the Philippine government. They spit on us.....you only show your ignorance with comments like that. They are our strongest ally in that region and deserve our support when it is needed. Bottom Line: This was a terrible tragedy and the Filipino people deserve some compassion and sympathy.

Many people think they have the right at their side.Being a former ch.eng for almost 25 years on several ships I have to say that if countries are not following international rules like IMO of which many never heard about then we never can find out who was to blame ,crew, office or weatherman (who are only giving service to whome needed it,like coastgard).Starting with the crew: did they have the wright papers to run a ship like the P.o.s!!! .Reading and listening to the comments of their office saying ,its unfair to say they are not to be blaimed, who are they? Do they have any knowledge of ships or sea or are they only office people who are counting the money for their bosses. Who knows they were, by not providing the ship the spares they needed to do proper maintenance or the right equipment to read the weather properly. How was the captain involved in this ,thinking about the company, who has to make some buggs over the backs of their workers forsing him to sail out and blaiming him later that he has the last saying in this. How is it possible that a ship like the P.o.s comes in a situation that the main engines stops or stolls ,as they say over the news. Was there no back up system in case of a black out (generator failure)to start up the system again or was there no maintanence done to this system!!!! Was their any survey done or audit, internal or external regarding the state of the ship and engines. Not only by the company but also by outsiders like insurance companies. The company can say the ship is seaworthy,of coarse they will say that because money has to be made.
Looking at the findings and history of the IMO regarding ships dissasters,I come to a conclusion that its not only the crew on board who has to be blaimed in many cases, they have famelies as well. Finding out the history of this company its amazing that they still eczist.(powerfull friends?)

Its very painful to know that somewhere out there 700 passengers on board a ferry are fighting for their lives, yet we cant do something because of the strong winds. This shows how vulnerable we are in the Philippines in times of disaster. We let 700 passengers let go off their lives- The unpredictable weather system have done this. The storm signal was up in the Bicol Region when the boat sails off from shore; yet the storm changed directions and run through the course of the ill fated boat. People blamed the weather bureau, but, sometimes wisdom fails us because we did not always see God's point.

Gods point ? What has that to do with the stupidity of the boat owner who continued to sail despite the warnings , greed for the almighty dollar , this has happened quite often in Thailand under similar circumstance, but not with so many passengers thank the lord .

After reading the headline, I thought to myself that it must be
a Philippines ferry. And I was correct as I read more.

You think I would ever ride on a ferry boat from the P.I. NO WAY.

Seems to happen a lot over there. Probably because the nation is poor and the
leaders use the tax money in other areas. Probably corruption involved.

This typhoon, the earthquake in china, the floods and storms in the United States, the volcano eruption in Chile, the disaster in Myanmar-WHAT NEXT!!. This is evidence that the earth is getting hotter-too hot!!All these weather catastrophes happening around the world are a result of a changing environment and they are all connected.. It is time that we do something to save the environment and ourselves. We need to be more aware of the products and chemicals that we use that is destroying our atmospher.

We are very aware of the causes of the degradation of our waters, lands and atmosphere. However, it does no good to worry about it because governments and big businesses don't give a damn.

Governments and big business will always be in bed together. It's all about money and power. You and I are of no consequence.

Yes thats terrible news ferries are usually the cheapest way to get from island to island. Fast craft are more expensive and usually not affordable for some. I have been to the philippines a few times and ejoyed all the nice and friendly people there and the exciting and spectacular views. The people are great and the live singing bands are wonderfull.I plan on visiting again. I even have a photo of a cebu ferry when I was traveling from cebu to bohol on my flickr page. I wonder if its the same ship. Heres a look h t t p://w w Eric

My heart goes out to all the families who have suffered as a result of this tragedy. That being said, we must all acknowledge this is just another example of businesses not giving a damn about the people they serve. It's all about money and profit. Proper safety never seems to be factored into the equation. This is true in all countries. Things will never change.

I don't understand tragedy only God understands why? I keep asking myself why did the plane go down quite sometime ago in San Fransisco Bay Area, It was an Alaska flight landing there soon, but a part was not stable and consequently no one survived. I had wondered if a classmate of mine from High School was on the plane. I hope not! The teasing can be forgiven! I know the Philippines is always under typhoons! I know people who have been missionaries there! We need to pray for the people over there undergoing that tragedy! So just lift it up to God!

                                    Two constants in many disasters are;
                                    1. Greed
                                    2. Male ego
Companies cut corners on safety in order to maximize profit, and safety gets compromised. This happens all over the world, and it's worse in countries that don't have strong regulatory agencies. That's why there's an extremely short runway at the domestic airport in Sao Paolo, that's why thousands of coal miners die every year in China, and planes crash constantly in Africa.

Men are the decision makers, and ego drives them to poor decisions--proceeding where they shouldn't proceed. The male ego says "I can do this", even when it risks hundreds of lives. That's why an Air Florida jet takes off, covered with ice, and why a Japanese high-speed train flies off the track because the guy thinks he can take the turn so fast, and boats sink when they shouldn't even risk going to sea.
And a bus goes over a cliff because the guy wants to cut three minutes from his trip.
