'Smiley Face Killers' linked to 40 deaths in US

In 22 cases across five states, they have found what they believe to be the sickening trademark signature of the psychopaths – either smiley face graffiti or distinctive sets of symbols daubed near the spot where the dead men's bodies entered the water. Nine of the smiley faces had a particularly sinister twist – they were drawn with horns.

That shocking claim has earned the alleged gang a chilling nickname: the "Smiley Face Killers". It is causing particular alarm in the neighbouring states of Minnesota and Wisconsin, where 19 of the deaths occurred.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Your comment made me do a double-take! I wonder why this isn't bigger news in the US press?

I have thought for some time that there was something like this going on. There have been far to many of this type of "accidents' going on in Minnesota and Wisconsin for to many years. There seemed to be to many college kids "falling" in the river after a night of drinking at the bar. Im glad to see someone investing deeper into this. I agree with you DWing, I sure hope the catch these suckers.

There were a couple other articles on Newsvine on this topic; this one has the additional info that some of the smiley faces had horns, which makes it all the more likely it's a calling card. I likewise hope they catch the unsubs soon.

Wonder how long after death GHB remains detectable?

I think it has less to do with how long the victim is dead, and more to do with the fact that being saturated in water for so long tends to leach toxins away. Most of all, though, I think toxicology reports weren't done on most of the vicitms, since their deaths were ruled accidental drownings, not murder.
