Eighth wonder of the world? The stunning temples secretly carved out below ground by 'paranormal' eccentric

advertisement

Nestling in the foothills of the Alps in northern Italy, 30 miles from the ancient city of Turin, lies the valley of Valchiusella. Peppered with medieval villages, the hillside scenery is certainly picturesque.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

It's amazing what one guy with a dream can accomplish. I'm humbled.

That is a truly amazing find, for you and for the authorities, who, I noticed, decided to seize the temples. That upsets me; the group works all this time to create that, and then, the state just takes it over. That's wrong.

The authorities did eventually give them full control once again though. It does show you how authorities often make knee jerk reactions when people go around protocol, but that cooler heads often prevail.

As no planning permission had been granted, they decided to share their scheme only with like-minded people.

Volunteers, who flocked from around the world, worked in four-hour shifts for the next 16 years with no formal plans other than Falco's sketches and visions, funding their scheme by setting up small businesses to serve the local community.

But a year later the police swooped on the community demanding: "Show us these temples or we will dynamite the entire hillside."

'They are to remind people that we are all capable of much more than we realise and that hidden treasures can be found within every one of us once you know how to access them,' says Falco.

Common good. Awesome find.

The link to the one on Nek Chand Saini (under 'floating' -- cute) was really interesting, tho I wish he had not built on a govt preserve. Never heard of him before.
"Discovering new ones" links to a book on Amazon all about these fantasy worlds built by eccentrics. There seems to be a lot of them around.

Excellent, Belarius. I was hoping one of those links would discuss Leedskalnin's Coral Castle. I first read about it in a Ripley's Believe it or Not book when I was about nine, and have been intrigued by it ever since.

Is that the one built by the guy that nobody could figure out how he moved the blocks?

Is he the guy that never married and blathered about his Sweet Sixteen that he fell in love with as a young man? What was this about floating rocks in the air to move them? Is that what he said or what someone guesses he did?? He was very secretive and never let anyone watch him move those blocks...
I see he is on the web, or rather, his "published writings" are on the web at keelynet.com/leed.htm -- I had no idea he wrote anything down! It includes a piece on the use of magnetic current.

Speaking of moving heavy objects I was watching a documentary where this group of people were doing a reenactment where they had to portage a very large heavy boat. Took several days as I recall and they totally exhausted themselves doing it with rollers. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why they didn't make use a pole and a rope and leverage as undoubtedly the original party did.
I am sure this gentleman made good use of levers and pulleys to manage his feats of strength.
